EUTRAIN special session “Towards an international Transport research funding and data sharing framework: Discussing the recommendations of the EU sponsored EUTRAIN project”

16/07/2013

Tuesday 16th July, 2013,  17.20-19.00 hrs

Session Organiser:  ECTRI, the European Conference of Transport Research Institutes

The purpose of this Session was to raise awareness among WCTR Rio 2013 participants about international transport research cooperation opportunities in two areas: funding of cooperative research projects,  and data sharing. The basic ingredients for the Session were a short but concise presentation of the recommendations of the EUTRAIN project in these two areas (i.e. funding and data sharing) as well as presentations by a small number of presenters of best practices in this field. The EUTRAIN (European Transport Research Area International Cooperation Activities) is a project, sponsored by the EU’s FP7 programme, whose main objectives are (among others) to:

  • Contribute towards the establishment of a framework for international transport research cooperation

  • Consider, discuss and provide a common understanding of current practices for research governance and management as well as barriers, gaps, and diversions for international transport research cooperation

  • Investigate a number of specific “Themes” that have been found by previous work as of primary importance for the further promotion and proliferation of international cooperation in the future. These “Themes” include:
    -  Research infrastructures and their networking possibilities
    -  Information and data sharing issues
    -  Research training and human resource issues – mobility of researchers and networking
    -  Institutional cultures and research governance regimes
    -  Pre-standardization activities and interoperability (of research results) – Harmonizing approaches and practices for the take up of research results
    -  Intellectual Property regimes and follow-up actions.

The session concentrated in 2 of these “themes” and aimed at drawing some conclusions as to best practice examples and lessons for the future.
