Brief description of the legal entity
The French institute of science and technology for transport, development and networks (IFSTTAR) is a public research institution (A Public Scientific and Technical Research Establishment) resulting from the merging of The French National Institute for Transport and Safety Research (INRETS) and the French Central Laboratory of Roads and Bridges (LCPC). Institut national de recherche sur les transports et leur sécurité (INRETS) is the former French national institute for transport and safety research and its research roadmap includes the following areas:

  • Safety of people transportation systems

    • Health and road safety (epidemiology, accident, biomechanics, psychology and sociology of human behavior)
    • Public Policies on risk
    • Technology and human factors: human-machine cooperation
  • Innovative transportation systems

    • Mobility of people, lifestyles, territories (analysis of mobility, acceptability and conditions change, networks and regional planning)
    • Goods transportation
    • Traffic management systems and network optimisation methods
  • Reliability and sustainability of transport systems, optimization of energy consumption, reduction of environmental impact

    • Safety and efficiency of transport ; guided transportation systems
    • Communication, navigation, surveillance, diagnosis and maintenance
    • Evaluation and reduction of emissions of greenhouse gases and pollutants
    • Evaluation and reduction of transport noise - multi-nuisance analysis

Laboratoire Central des Ponts & Chaussées (LCPC) is the former French Public Works Research Institute. LCPC fields of activity were:

  • Roads Design, Construction
  • Maintenance and Operation of Highways, “Intelligent Roads »
  • Conduct methodological researches and studies
  • Carry surveys and provide consultancy services
  • Steer and supervise the research activity of the Scientific Regional Network of the Ministry in charge of Public Works
  • Engineering Structures Design, Construction, Maintenance
  • Geotechnical engineering and Natural hazards Environmental issues
  • Urban Engineering

LCPC’s missions were:

  • Ensure the co-ordination with international research and promote French techniques abroad
  • Disseminate new knowledge, regulations and standard
  • Beneficiaries: numerous stakeholders, Public authorities, State, Local governments, Infrastructure owners and managers (public and private), Engineering companies, Construction companies, Materials and equipment producers

IFSTTAR is also involved in 50 European projects (European FP 6 & FP7) among which 6 Networks of Excellence: HUMANIST, EURNEX, ISN, NEARCTIS, VPH and HYCON2. Outside Europe, IFSTTAR has scientific and research agreements with partner institutes and Universities (e.g researchers stages and exchanges) within the United States (Berkeley, Penn State, Georgia Tech, Viriginia tech, TTU,..), Canada & Quebec, Australia (MONASH, QUT,…), Japan, Korea, Greece, India, etc. IFSTTAR also offers its knowledge in Surface (Land) Transport research within the Mediterranean Union countries (UPM) as the European Union (EU) ones. IFSTTAR also has expertness on scientific and educational engineering which is implemented throughout IFSTTAR’ partnerships with Maroccan and Tunisian Universities.
